Philosophy

What will I study?

You will study an introduction to philosophy which includes Reason and experience, what is a person, God and the World and freewill and determinism. You will also study Key themes in philosophy which includes philosophy of the mind, political philosophy and moral philosophy and finally you will study philosophical problems which will require you to study the philosophical text written by Rene Descartes called Meditations.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by 4 exams.

  • Exam 1 = Introduction to Philosophy 1 - 1 hour and 30 minutes 25% of the mark
  • Exam 2 = Introduction to Philosophy 2 - 1 hour and 30 minutes 25% of the mark
  • Exam 3 = Key themes in Philosophy - 2 hours 30% of the mark
  • Exam 4 = Philosophical problems - 1 hour and 30 minutes 20% of the mark

Exams can be taken in January or June.

What will I need?

A copy of the text Mediations by Rene Descartes. Also a willingness to discuss and air your ideas.

What can this subject lead to?

Philosophy is a highly academic subject and plays a part in all careers especially with regards to ethical behaviour, although Philosophy plays a much more prominent role in Law, Medicine and Politics.

Entry requirements

A grade B in GCSE English, History or RE.
