Students' Band Performance Raises £2,300

Students at Tollbar Sixth Form banded together to raise money for children in developing countries.

They raised thousands at a concert for pupils at the school, which will help immunise youngsters from measles and contribute to their education.

One of the organizers, Francesca Boyd (17) said: "The idea started when I got a Unicef card for my birthday.

"It said on it that a donation had been made to give 50 children measles vaccinations in developing countries.

"I thought it was a really good idea and, as a result, wanted to do a fundraiser.

"I went back to school, and the other students and the teachers were really enthusiastic when I told them.

"We got a band made up of local students - The Villadoors - who already play a lot of functions, to agree to play at Tollbar for free.

"As a result of money collected at the event, we raised £2,300. Half went to Unicef, and the other half will contribute to work at the Egcekesi school in Africa.

"It was certainly worth all the stress and, if we get the chance, we will certainly organise something like that again for this summer."
