More Students Have Sixth Sense

Students are voting with their feet by choosing to return to traditional courses aimed at university degrees that will get them into a job.

The number applying to study maths, English and science subjects in the next academic year has doubled - even tripled in some cases.

"Students and their parents are now having to pay tremendous amounts to study at university and they want a return for their money," said Tollbar chief executive David Hampson.

"We are seeing a real shift away from complementary degree courses at universities back to high-quality, professional degrees that are directly linked to jobs.

"The students are voting with their feet and applying to Tollbar to study A-level courses that relate to university. They realise that if they come to Tollbar to study we will guarantee to support them throughout."

For those students who live in Louth, or any of the villages along the A16 there will be a free bus service operating from September.

The bus will be jointly funded by Tollbar Sixth Form College and Tollbar Academy and will be available to students attending either centre. The bus will be provided by Cooper's Coach Company and will take a route yet to be determined.

The academy would like to hear from parents and students, who live in the villages between Louth and Grimsby, so that an exact route can be planned to enable as many pick-ups as possible on a daily basis. The bus will return by the same route each day. If you are interested, call 01472 500505.

Tollbar Sixth Form College is entirely separate from the award-winning Tollbar Academy, providing students with an adult environment, but maintaining the superlative achievement record and high standards of the main academy, coupled with some of the best facilities in the UK.

The college offers the widest range of courses in the region. The acclaimed International Baccalaureate Diploma is now in its fifth year at Tollbar and, last summer, 92 per cent of sixth form students achieved university places at some of the top institutions in the country, including Oxford and Durham.

This qualification sets students apart from the rest. It gives them the opportunity to study and it gives them a greater chance of standing out to employers.

The range of A-level courses at Tollbar is increasing all of the time in line with demand. The college concentrates on academic courses that will get students into university, or onto their chosen career path, and there are committed, excellent teachers who will do their best to help students get there.

*Tollbar Sixth Form College will hold an open evening on Wednesday 1 February 2012 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm for students to see what the centre has to offer.
